Freelancing The CWA Canada - CUP Partnership

More and more emerging media workers are turning to freelancing as a way to gain experience or supplement their income. CWA Canada wants to support new freelancers in dealing with engagers, finding work, and gaining relevant skills.

CWA Canada Associate Member Freelance Initiatives

Paid Freelancing Opportunities

We occasionally set associate members up with freelance opportunities for the CWA Canada and Canadian Media Guild websites. We look for pieces on youth, labour and/or journalism. If you come across a related event or issue in your community, please feel free to send your pitch in to Katherine Lapointe (cwa@cup.ca). Freelancers get to work with a mentor, learn how to work with a contract and an invoice, and are paid!

Examples of members' work:

Freelance Training Seminars
Working in conjunction with the Canadian Media Guild's freelance program, we frequently organize skills training workshops.  Associate members are always welcome to attend! You will find out about these in the monthly e-newsletter and in our Facebook group.

Some past examples:

Toronto Freelance Survival Seminar -- a day-long course that covered pitching, social media, contracts, and taxes.

Taking the 'Free' out of Freelancing -- a Halifax workshop with longtime freelancer, Kim Pittaway. She shared advice on how to actually make a living as a freelancer!

Helpful Resources

Canadian Media Guild Freelance

cmg_freelancer_webButtonWhatever your media talent or stage of professional experience, for an annual fee of $150, you can join Canadian Media Guild (CMG) Freelance, connect with others across Canada and cyberspace, and enjoy the benefits of our services and resources.

This is basically the next step up in membership, after "associate".  Yes, this membership does cost money, but in return you get access to online software training through Lynda.com, to affordable health benefits, and to contract advice and counsel from CMG staff.

The Story Board

20140116_144544The Story Board is an initiative of the Canadian Media Guild and the Canadian Writers Group to create an online community for independent journalists and media freelancers from across Canada.

It's the place to go for freelance advice, stories from the field and the latest news and events.  Storyboard broke the TC Media and Venture Publishing stories, and continues to be a place where freelancers can voice their concerns and find collective support.
