CWA Canada Associate Members now eligible for Canadian Press internships

We are very excited that CWA Canada has negotiated an agreement with one of its branches, The Canadian Press (CP). CP is now accepting applications from CWA Canada Associate Members for one-week internships.

This is a pilot project in which the union will match the $100 per week that CP usually pays its interns. Both CWA Canada and CP strongly believe that it is important to support young journalists and to help them get the experience, training and mentoring they need.

The Canadian Press is a full-service, multimedia company that supplies news to most of Canada's media companies, including newspapers, online, radio and television. Applicants can expect to be involved in all aspects of the news gathering process, including research, interviewing, writing, audio and video.

The program will run in Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal (in both English and French), Toronto and Halifax and will eventually be expanded to other cities in Canada.

How to apply:

  • You must be a CWA Canada Associate Member
  • Send in a resume and cover letter describing why you would like an internship and how it would benefit you.
  • Include any clippings, audio or video of journalism-related work you have done.
  • Address applications to Editor-In-Chief, The Canadian Press, and email to:

or send by mail to:

"My internship with the Canadian Press was a WONDERFUL experience! This opportunity helped me tremendously in many aspects of journalism - I improved my writing, multimedia and interviewing skills all while learning from some of the best reporters and editors in the business. Working in a busy newsroom is a thrilling experience, and I was able to cover some great stories during my time with the Canadian Press. I'm so grateful I had to opportunity to spend a week with one of Canada's most respected news organization, and I can't wait to see where I'll end up next."  - Andrea Ross, Staff Reporter at the Gateway, Edmonton, AB
